Hey gang! I originally shared this recipe in one of my posts on GoRVing’s blog…make sure you swing by and check it out!
If you haven’t tried making your own microwave popcorn bags, you just HAVE to. It’s so easy and much healthier, since you’re not getting all that extra mystery goop that comes with the commercial brands. Popcorn on its own is actually packed with healthy nutrients, did you know? In fact, it’s got more polyphenols (antioxidant substances) than most fruits and veggies. It’s also whole-grain, ridiculously low-cal, and has almost as much fiber as bran flakes!
In the RV, we like to keep it simple, so that makes popcorn a popular choice when the munchies hit on the road. Here’s how easy it is:
Basic Homemade Microwave Popcorn Bags:
- Popcorn kernels
- Brown paper bags
- Optional toppings
- Measure out ¼ cup of popcorn kernels in a brown paper bag.
- Fold the top lip of the bag over twice.
- Stand it up in the microwave, and nuke it up to 2 minutes (90 seconds works perfectly in my microwave).
That’s all it takes! Makes you wonder why you’ve ever bothered buying the store-bought ones, doesn’t it? I should mention that there’ll be a few unpopped kernels, so be careful as you take a big handful. Plus, you aren’t quite done once you’ve popped your bag. You’ve got to come up with popcorn toppings that suit your taste buds. A family favorite of ours is:
You simply mix a tablespoon of melted coconut oil and a tablespoon of real maple syrup. Pour it over the prepared popcorn bag and SHAKE! Tastes just like waffles. AND! Just like waffles you can get even MORE creative by adding things like freeze-dried strawberries, dried bananas, nuts, what have you.
I share a bunch of other popcorn toppings over on the GoRVing blog, so if you’re curious, check it out. AND. I’m always looking for other toppings suggestions. If you’ve got some, leave a comment below!
