OK, I’ll admit it, when RVing, I rarely light a campfire, no matter how much Stef asks.  Typically, this is because I’d have to either gather firewood (not always allowed) or bring it (extra weight and hassle).  Then I’d have to arrange a suitable containment to light it in, and clean up afterwards.  It isn’t that I don’t WANT a campfire, it’s just too much work. But when scouting new products for RVers at the 2015 Outdoor Retailer Winter show, we found a product that promises to make the whole process incredibly easy:  Burnie, the all wood self-burning grill.  Check out the video below to see what I mean:

The first thing I noticed about Burnie was that it was very small and light.  Bringing this in the RV, even our small Class B, would be easy.

The next thing to note about Burnie is that it’s made of 100% wood.  There’s no lighter fluid, no propane bottles, no mess, and no waste.  As the grill burns itself out, the entire thing turns to ash.  When you’re done using it, just walk away (well, make sure it’s out first).  That’s my kind of cleanup.

Stef was most excited about how easy it would to use for campfire cooking. We love to make little “hobo packs” to throw on our campfire; which is basically meat and veggies wrapped in foil. And of course, there’s her famous turkey stuffed campfire apples. Burnie would be perfect for that.

I’m sure we’ve all been to forests and campgrounds where they have restrictions on bringing in outside firewood.  I asked Ross about this, and happily, those restrictions don’t apply.  Burnie is a kiln-dried product that’s actually USDA inspected, so it’s safe to bring and burn anywhere wood burning is allowed.

The other thing that comes to mind with Burnie doesn’t necessarily have to do with RVing.  On one of our most memorable snowshoe hikes, Stef and I were lucky enough to be hiking with someone who had the foresight to bring along firewood, kindling, matches, and some heavy duty foil.  We lit a small campfire under the full moon on the top of a mountain.  It was awesome.  So I’m thinking, as small and easy as Burnie is, the next awesome hike just got that much easier.

And, if you’re wondering, we’re not getting paid by Burnie (though we did leave with one).  I’m just generally excited about the product and bringing it along on our next RV adventure.
